Migraines Q & A

MultiCare Medical Group

What happens before a migraine begins?

You may notice changes that signal an oncoming migraine in the day or two before the pain starts. During this period of time, called the prodrome phase, you may experience:

  • Mood changes from depression to euphoria
  • Food cravings
  • Neck stiffness
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Constipation
  • Frequent yawning

About 15% of people with migraines experience an aura before their headache pain begins. Aura symptoms typically last 20-60 minutes and often involve your eyes, so you may see flashes of light or have distorted vision.

You could also develop changes in touch, speech, and movement. For example, you may feel tingling in your arms, have a hard time talking, hear noises or music, or have uncontrollable movements.

What are the symptoms of a migraine?

A migraine is one of the most painful types of headaches, although it often begins as a dull ache, then the pain builds for one to two hours. While migraines commonly occur on one side of the head near the temple, you may feel pain anywhere around the head or neck.

Migraine characteristics include:

  • Throbbing pain that lasts up to 72 hours
  • Movement worsens the pain
  • Sensitivity to light and sounds, and possibly smell and touch
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Lightheadedness

What happens when migraine pain ends?

Some people feel exhausted following a migraine, while others feel elated. When your migraine pain finally stops, you may go through a 24-hour period called the post-drome phase. During this time, many people experience:

  • Weakness
  • Moodiness
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Ongoing sensitivity to light and sound

How can chiropractic care treat your migraine?

Clinical trials suggest that several spinal manipulation techniques help reduce the number of migraines and also significantly diminish the severity of migraines when they occur. In some cases, chiropractic care may prevent migraine headaches just as well as preventive medications.

Therapeutic massage also helps relieve migraine pain. Massage that targets reflex points on your hands and feet is especially beneficial for treating migraine pain. Your treatment plan can include a variety of manual therapies, like soft tissue massage and trigger point therapy, that alleviate headaches by promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

You can count on holistic treatment at MultiCare Medical Group. They teach what you need to know about nutrition, exercise, and relaxation techniques. The team also works with you to identify lifestyle factors that might set off your migraines, such as foods, food additives, beverages, and sensory or environmental triggers.
